One of the questions for 'Talk Tuesdays' was "Do you plan to join a support group?" According to the Canadian Community Action on Seniors, "Loneliness is hard on one's health. A lonely person is more liable to develop colds and infections because loneliness puts ones immune system under stress and it becomes impaired." People try to reduce that stress in different ways. Some rely on food, alcohol or medications. This only exacerbates the problem and causes other difficulties.
Being alone and being lonely are not the same thing. Some people are happy being a lone wolf. For many, being alone doesn't mean being lonely! They may connect with others from time to time, have meaningful activities in their lives, have a pet or pets as companions or a spiritual relationship that's important to them.
Loneliness usually refers to being unhappy with the emotional and social relationships that one does or does not have! When we are trying to manage our weight, it's important to have support. If you don't get it at home, join a weight management support group. If you're not comfortable in that setting, get the support you need through spiritual involvement. People involved in their church or synagogue, giving help, support and love to others, get it back ten fold!
Also, if you're a computer person, joining an online support group works for many. It's the latest form of communication for busy people. It helps because you have others to talk to who desire to proceed in the same direction.
Write and let us know how you plan to get the support and "food for the soul" you need to achieve success in weight management. Lyn
"Give and it will be given to you." Jesus
